I can’t believe it’s been a year since our Italy/Switzerland trip! I made a few posts about it when we first got back which you can find here, here, here and here. But then the holiday’s came and I got busy and didn’t finish posting the rest of the photos. In fact, I haven’t even posted anything about Switzerland yet and our time there was probably my favorite, so those are coming soon as well!
The last stop on our trip was to visit the small village of Portofino.
Mike’s family on his dad’s side are Italian and his great grandfather grew up in Portofino, so it was really fun visiting knowing there was family history. We tried finding the house he grew up in but weren’t able to, however, we did find a town square that’s named after the family.
Portofino is really really small so you can basically see everything within a few hours and there’s not a lot of options for lodging. For that reason, we ended up staying in the larger town right next to it called Santa Margherita. If you plan on visiting the area, I highly recommend doing that as well because it’s a quick 10 minute boat ride to get to Portofino. We stayed in this Villa and we absolutely loved it and the hosts were the sweetest! It was probably the biggest room we had on our entire trip. Santa Margherita also has a cute market area with lots of little shops to explore. We were told they had a farmers market everyday but I think that’s just what they call it when all the shops finally open in the afternoon, LOL.
Fall is a great time to visit the area because the weather is still pretty nice but there’s not as big of crowds like you would find in summer. It did rain a few times but not for long and we both enjoyed it. It definitely didn’t keep us from sightseeing. If we go back again I would definitely prefer to visit the same time of year.
